The Main star of constellation Bootis, Arcturus is the 3rd brightest star in the night sky and was called the “Star of Joy” by Prehistoric Polynesian navigators.
Arcturus is one of the brightest stars in the sky more than 110 times as the Sun in visible light wavelengths. Its total (bolometric) power output is about 180 times that of the Sun, about 26 times the size of the sun and around 10 billion years old. For comparison, the Sun, which is in the prime stages of its life, is roughly 4.5 billion years old. Arcturus is located 36.7 light-years from Earth and is part of the Arcturus Stream, a a group of ancient stars which move at a different speed and angle than other stars in our galaxy, and thought to be the remnants of a dwarf galaxy that collided with the Milky Way
